Lisle provides a 110-acre community park with a variety of recreational amenities including an outdoor amphitheatre, band shell, fishing pond, baseball fields, swimming pools, basketball courts, tennis courts, sand volleyball courts, play ground and an ice skating rink. Area youth learn athletic skills at the 57,000 square foot Chicago Bulls/White Sox Training Academy in town. Snow skiers and snowboarders enjoy Four Lakes Ski Hill. Residents enjoy the beauty of the Morton Arboretum with a nine-mile vehicle road and 14 miles of foot trails. Benedictine University offers one the Midwest’s largest bird collections at the Jurica Nature Museum. Lisle was originally home to four main Pottawatomie Indian villages. In 1816, the U.S. Government negotiated a treaty with these Native Americans to relinquish all claim and title to the land. With the grant of statehood in 1818 and the opening of the Erie Canal, settlers flocked to the fertile land. Some of Lisle’s first settlers arrived in 1832. Many of them were farmers and appreciated the timber, fertile land and water resources in the area. Lisle’s first schoolhouse was constructed in 1837. In 1850, Southwest Plank Road, now known as Ogden Avenue, was extended through town from Chicago. In 1864, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad traveled from Chicago to nearby Aurora. Lisle’s railroad depot was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1874. This historic depot, as well as historic Beaubien Tavern, is located at Lisle Station Park. The Village of Lisle was incorporated in 1956. |
